About Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar is a city in Bodoland Territorial Council of Assam. It is the headquarters of Kokrajhar district and is located at the bank of Gourang River. It is characterized by dense forest area.

History of Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar city was earlier part of the Goalpara district. Bongaigaon, Dhubri and Kokrajhar were part of Goalpara district. Kokrajhar had been a part of the Bijni kingdom which was ruled by the Koch Rajbongshi kings.

In 1957 Kokrajhar was carved out from the Goalpara district and made a separate sub division known as the Kokrajhar sub division. In 1983 the Kokrajhar sub division was made into Kokrajhar district.

Geography of Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar has an area of 3,169.22 sq km. The city is located at 26.4 degree north and 90.27 degree east. The city has an elevation of 124 feet. The area of Kokrajhar is bordered by Bhutan to the north, Dhubri district to the south, Bongaigaon to the east and West Bengal to the west.

Kokrajhar has sub tropical climatic condition. The city experiences high humidity during summer. Winter is cold accompanied by fog. During monsoon the city experiences heavy rainfall and thunderstorm.

According to 2001 India census the population of Kokrajhar is 31,152. The male population is 52% and the female population is 48%. The literacy rate of Kokrajhar is 79%. Male literacy rate is 84% and that of the female is 74%.
