Tourism in Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar is a city in Bodoland Territorial Council of Assam. It is located at the bank of Gourang river. Kokrajhar is characterized by having dense forest area. The forests of Kokrajhar have very rich flora and fauna. Nature is at its best in Kokrajhar. The important tourist spots in Kokrajhar are the following:

Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary

Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife park covering an area of 45.568 sq kms. It falls under both Dhubri and Kokrajhar districts. It is located around 68 kms from Dhubri and 6 kms from Kokrajhar town. It is counted among the five national parks of Assam.  The sanctuary is a hilly region with two lakes Dheer Beel and Diplai Beel running through the either side of the sanctuary.

History of Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary

Chakrashila Hill was first declared as a reserve forest in 1966. On July 14th 1994, it was recognized with the status of sanctuary by the Government of Assam. A local environmentalist group, Nature’s Beckon who first sighted the Golden Langur, played an important role in view of this recognition as a sanctuary.

Climate of Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary

The Chakrashila National Park has tropical moist climate. It gets an annual average rainfall varying between minimum 2000mm to maximum 4000 mm. The maximum temperature goes up to 30 degrees in summers and falls to 8 degrees in winters. Rainfall in this sanctuary occurs the most during the months of July and August. The relative humidity is high with an average of 86% in summer.

Biodiversity of Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary

Chakrashila has a mix of Sal coppice regeneration, semi evergreen and mixed deciduous forests. The Sal tree is found in abundance here. Apart from that, trees like the Amari, Bhumura, Udal, Kadam, Bonsum, and grasslands are also found.

Chakrashila is famous for the Golden Langur and is the second protected habitat for the Golden Langur in India. Different types of mammals including twenty three species of reptiles like snakes, crocodiles, alligators, lizards, turtles are found here. Rare species like the Short-tailed Mole, Indian Flying Fox, Short nosed Fruit Bat, Indian False vampire, Indian Pipistrelle, Rhesus Macaque, Chinese Pangolin, Asiatic Jackal, Bengal Fox are also found here. Bird species like the Hornbill, Little Cormorant, Darter, Little Egret, Shag, Pond Heron, Night Heron, Open Billed Stork, Greater Adjutant Stork, Cotton Teal, Lesser Whistling Teal, Kingfisher, Minivets, and Tailor Birds etc are also found. One can also find 40 species of butterflies in the forests of sanctuary.

Fauna of Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary

Manas National Park

Tourist can also visit Manas National Park. Manas National Park also falls in Kokrajhar though it primarily occupies Barpeta. The park is known for its varied flora and fauna.

Daimalu Park

A wonderful Park meant for people of all ages, one can visit it at any time of the day to take a stroll around and enjoy the wonderful ambiance. It is located in Kharigaon.
